History of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
One hundred years ago, on the campus of Howard University, 22 young Black collegiate women formed Delta Sigma Theta Sorority as a public service organization. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded on January, 13 1913 still serves today as a non-profit national organization of predominantly Black college women committed to public service. The focus of Delta Sigma Theta is framed by the following Five-Point Programmatic Thrusts:
Economic Development
Educational Development
International Awareness & Involvement
Physical & Mental Health
Political Awareness & Involvement
Suffolk County Alumnae Chapter was charter in 1989 with the sole purpose of extending the resources and mission of Delta throughout Long Island.
Nationally and locally, the purpose of Delta Sigma Theta is to provide services and programs to support human welfare. Incorporated in 1930, Delta has more than 200,000 members across 900 chapters in over 46 states and countries.
